Our four year old son Luke has been a client of the John McGivney Children’s Centre since he was nine months of age. By the time he was six months, we realized Luke wasn’t developing like his two older brothers had. He also started having seizures and other health problems. We were worried, frustrated and didn’t understand the path we were being taken down. Our paediatrician referred us to several specialists and also to JMCC. Our initial nerves were quickly dispelled at our first intake interview with the several therapists assessing Luke. Because he was so “behind” already, he was recommended for therapy to start immediately. We started with weekly physiotherapy, OT and feeding (speech started regularly when he turned two). The next two years were a roller coaster ride for our family. Through all of Luke’s illnesses, hospital stays, doctor’s appointments, and therapy sessions we could always rely on the JMCC and its staff to be there for us in so many ways. I don’t know what we would have done or where we would be without their services. Their knowledge, care and compassion, is second to none. We have also been fortunate to be able to borrow equipment that Luke needed to further his development; that we use to this day. This has been a great help, as we would not to be able to bear the financial burden of purchasing all this equipment ourselves. Since the spring of 2010 Luke has also benefited from the Preschool program at JMCC. He loves attending and looks forward to seeing his teachers and therapists! Although Luke is as yet non-verbal, the expression on his face says it all when we arrive every morning. We cannot thank the Centre and its staff enough for the work they do with our son. With their continued help and support, we know Luke will continue to learn and thrive.
