Alexander was born at an early 25 weeks gestation weighing a mere 1 pound and 14 oz. He fought for 5 months in the neonatal intensive care unit until finally he was able to go home. From the beginning Alexander faced extreme odds against him. We, as parents, faced an undefined future for our son. Alexander was referred to John McGivney Children’s Centre at ten months and we were instantly embraced by his team. This was so comforting to our family at a time when we were so uncertain about everything. When we began attending JMCC, Alexander had very poor upper body control and could not hold his head up. Since then, Alexander has become stronger, has gained incredible head control and is able to move about by using a walker. It is amazing to watch your child accomplish things that initially seemed impossible. The John McGivney Children’s Centre provides Alexander with occupational, physiotherapy and speech therapy. He will soon complete the preschool program and looks forward to attending JK at JMCC in the fall. The excellent guidance and support from the professionals at JMCC has allowed Alexander to develop his strengths and excel. For our family, JMCC does not feel like therapy or school, it truly feels like family. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful children’s centre in our community. It is reassuring that when we send Alexander to JMCC for various programs, he is in the care of amazing and qualified therapists, teachers, social workers, speech and language pathologists, among many other professionals. Alexander continues to make great strides with the help he receives at JMCC. The initial odds placed against him at an early age have now been replaced with immeasurable motivation and potential. Uncertainty has become reassurance. Possibilities have become accomplishments. Thanks to JMCC and its staff for helping Alexander achieve his ambitions and hopes, and helping us as parents celebrate ours.
