Good oral health is important to children’s overall health. Yet, for some, regular dental care may not be affordable. Healthy Smiles Ontario is a program for children 17 and under who do not have access to any form of dental coverage.

The John McGivney Children’s Centre is working with our local Public Health Unit as one of the satellite community partners for this program.

The Windsor-Essex County Pediatric and Dysphagia Group is hosting a one day conference on Constipation, Reflux, and Enteral Tubes on May 16, 2012 at the John McGivney Children's Centre.

The purpose of the workshop is to provide information about our Augmentative Communication Clinic services, available funding, roles and responsibilities as well as strategies that can be used while the child is waiting for an assessment. We encourage families to invite other caregivers, grandparents, in-home workers, respite workers, Speech Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, teachers, educational assistants or anyone else with an interest in supporting communication to attend with them.

Our workshop offers opportunities to learn strategies to aid communication, ask questions and meet other caregivers in a small group setting.

The Windsor & District Junior Golf Academy is a developmental junior golf program designed to create a network for children to learn to play golf, make friends and sample competition in a positive and supportive learning environment. Our programs provide the opportunity to develop skills, progress in golf and have fun while establishing a continuing interest in the game. Our “MISSION” is to create programs that are affordable and accessible to young golfers of all races, physical abilities and economic backgrounds to the game of golf, while promoting values such as self-respect, responsibility, honesty, integrity and sportsmanship. We thank the Children's Aid Society/Foundation for choosing the John McGivney Children's Centre to partner with again this year in this fundraising event. Our children showed off their "abilities" on the fashion runway last fall and look forward to doing it again on November 17th.

Autism Program's Holiday Food Drive Challenge

Tis the season for giving! The Autism Program's Holiday Food Drive Challenge brought in 1,912 items to donate to the Unemployed Help Centre Food bank !

After a competitive and close race, the nine person team that won the challenge brought in 655 cans!!
The winning team has decided to share their prize with the rest of the office and will be hosting a hot chocolate and treat party.

Congratulations to the Autism Program staff on their generosity!

Ontario Association of Children's Rehabilitation Services

On October 6^th, 2011 Ontario will elect its next government. Between now and then, there will be lots of candidates in your community who will want your vote. This is an excellent time to educate people about the needs of kids and families and about the important services our kids need to be successful.

There are lots of ways you can get involved:

Write a letter to candidates in your community
Attend all candidates meetings
Be prepared when a candidate knocks on your door
Go to community events like BBQs that your candidates are hosting or will be present at
Start a social media campaign

Here are some suggestions about questions you might like to ask candidates:

Wait lists and wait times for rehabilitation services puts pressure on families. What would your party do to reduce the amount of time families need to wait?
All children in Ontario will be entering full day kindergarten. For some children with special needs, they will need extra therapy supports. What will your party do to ensure that they have the services they need to succeed?
Funding in the children’s rehabilitation sector is unpredictable. In order to provide services to families when they need them, we need a fair and sustainable funding system. Will your party commit to establishing a reliable funding formula for children’s services so we can build the capacity of our services to meet the needs of families?
Having a child with a disability is very expensive. What is your party’s plan to improve the financial supports for families of children with special needs so that they are not financially disadvantaged?
As children become adults, this is a time of great uncertainty for families. Many of the services available to children are no longer available when they turn adult age. What will your party do to ensure that the transition to adulthood is seamless and will allow our sons and daughters to live with as much independence as possible?
What is your party’s position on the importance of children? What will your government do to ensure children in need of extra services and supports are a high priority when deciding on budgets?

Ontario Children's Treatment Centres-Making Investments Count

In April 2010 the Minister of Children and Youth Services announced $9 million in new funding for Ontario’s Children’s Treatment Centres:

• At full implementation, OACRS estimated that 3600 children and 100 jobs would be positively affected by the government’s investment

• All CTCswere facing layoffs and service cuts without this valuable investment

• Wait times for core rehabilitation services had increased by 56% since 2007/2008

• “Impact 2011”Project was implemented to toassess the difference $9 million can make in the lives of children and families

Applebee's Restaurant Grand Opening Event to benefit JMCC

Applebee’s Restaurant has graciously chosen the John McGivney Children’s Centre to be the recipient of 100% of the proceeds from their grand opening charitable event to be held at 6 pm on Thursday, September 22^nd. Please RSVP by Friday, September 16^th by contacting the Applebee’s office - 519.979.7800, ext. 223 or 228.

The event will take place at their newest restaurant at 2187 Huron Church Rd and tickets are $25 each (cash, cheque or credit card), which includes appetizers, selected wine, and beer. Feel free to pass this along to your friends, family and business contacts to help join the grand opening celebration of Applebee’s newest community restaurant. In Memory of Dr. and Mrs. Chick

Staff and the Board of the John McGivney Children's Centre extend their sincere condolences to the family of Dr. and Mrs. Chick.

Dr. Chick was the former Medical Director of the Centre and provided dedicated service to children at the Centre for over 20 years. He served as a mentor to staff and helped to develop Centre clinics and policies regarding health and safety. Dr. Chick had a reputation with the Centre staff and children as being a “gentle giant”. The Centre was privileged to have had Dr. Chick guide the Centre for many years. In honour of Dr. and Mrs. Chick, the Centre's flag is being flown at half mast.

Suddenly, on August 19th, 2011 in Kent County. Beloved father and mother to Steven and wife Mary, of Tecumseh; Brian, of Thornhill; and Susan Chick, of Guelph. Dear Nanny and Papa to Jacqueline (and Keith Sargent), Natalie, Christina and Julia; Lucas, Colton, and Carter; Abigail, and Katherine. Great grandparents of Kaden, and KJ and will be lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews.

Dr. John was the son of the late John and Julia Chick. Dear brother of Margit Ardiel and Frank and wife Elizabeth. Dr. Chick, a devoted pediatrician, will be lovingly remembered by his many patients and their families, colleagues and friends. He was a former Chief of Pediatrics at Hotel Dieu Hospital and was prominently involved with the Children’s Rehab Centre of Windsor.

Donna was predeceased by her mother Edna Galvin, her father Donald Young and stepfather Brian Galvin. Dear sister of Clayt and wife Marilyn, of Midland. She was very active in the community, Past President of Questers and was an avid bridge enthusiast. Donna was instrumental in guiding the lives of both her husband and family.

The family would appreciate in memoriam donations to the John McGivney Children's Centre (formerly Children's Rehab Centre) or W.E. Care for Kids. Visiting Wednesday from 7 to 9pm, Thursday from 2 to 5pm, 7 to 9pm at Families First Funeral Home & Tribute Centre, 1065 Lauzon Rd. East Windsor (519-969-5841). A ‘Sharing Time’ followed by prayers will take place on Thursday at 8 pm. On Friday, family and friends are invited to meet at St. Anne Church, Tecumseh for a celebration of their lives at 10:30 am.

Brody was delighted to show off his sledge hockey skills and to talk about JMCC with Lieutenant Governor at the new fully accessible Amherstburg "United Communities Credit Union" Sports Complex. Congratulations to Brody for respresenting his sledge hockey league and the Centre so well!
