Occupational Therapists (OTs) at JMCC are regulated health professionals who provide assessment and treatment for children and youth to improve their ability to function and participate in everyday activities. These activities may include:
- Play and school work (productivity)
- Eating, dressing, bathing (self-care)
- Participating in activities with friends/in their community (leisure)
OTs work with children/youth and their caregivers to build skills, use adapted equipment (special seating, adapted utensils, pencil grips, bath seats, etc.) or modify tasks or the environment (home & vehicle modifications).
- Children/youth from birth to 21 years with a physical or developmental disability/delay who live in Windsor/Essex County are eligible for outpatient OT services. Families and doctors may refer to JMCC using our referral form.
- Children attending the JMCC day care and school programs may also be eligible for OT services while attending their program. Referrals may be initiated by families and other team members.
- School aged children may be referred to OT services for school-based motor concerns through the Community Care Access Centre School Health Support Services Program (CCAC SHSSP). Families and school staff may refer to CCAC.

- Medically fragile children (due to illness or injury) who are temporarily unable to access community services, may be eligible for OT in the home through the Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) home program. Families and doctors may contact CCAC to ask about eligibility and referral.
OTs work together with children/youth, their caregivers, and other team members to help promote development and independence. The type(s) of OT services will depend on the needs of the child/youth, and their caregivers and may include:
Assessment (fine motor, visual motor, self-care, equipment)
Direct therapy (individual or group) offered by an OT or a therapy assistant/aide
Monitoring (the OT provides programming and trains a caregiver to carry out recommendations)
Consultation with team members (caregivers, day care or school staff, etc.)
Recommendations for adaptive equipment & assistance with seeking funding if required
