Family Services
The Family Services Department provides many individual and group services and programs to enhance and support our clients and their families. The staff is committed to help children and their families maximize their potential.
 
GROUP SERVICES
 
Support and skill building groups may be provided based upon interest and available resources.

 
FAMILY SERVICES
 
Family Service Worker

The role of the Family Service Worker is to connect new families to appropriate programs and services at the John McGivney Children's Centre and in the community. This may include:
  • A home visit or telephone contact to gather information regarding parental and medical concerns around the child's development
  • Accessing community resources
  • Assistance with funding for transportation, respite care and medical supplies
  • Service Coordination
  • Advocacy
  • Planning for the future

SOCIAL WORK
 
Counselling services are offered to clients and family members to assist with difficulties related to a child's diagnosis and or treatment Counselling Services Offered for Parents and Guardians:
  • Supportive counselling services
  • Creating a healthy balance
  • Fostering healthy relationships
  • Support and advocacy
  • Building assertiveness skills for working with professionals
  • Parent Support Group (6-week program usually offered each Fall)

Counselling services for children, youth, and young adults
  • Promoting a positive self-image
  • Building social skills
  • Developing healthy coping strategies
  • Strategies to deal with bullying
  • Overcoming obstacles to developing friendships and personal relationships
  • Children's groups may be offered depending on interest and available resources

Kids are Kids Disability Awareness Program
  • This is a school-based program designed for children in Grades one through eight to promote disability awareness and social inclusion.

Transition services
  • Preparing for life transitions and the future, (ex. preschool, elementary school, high school, adulthood, post-secondary education)
  • Helping parents advocate for services for their child
  • Helping parents and young adults access available resources in the adult sector

Services for siblings and extended relatives
  • Supportive counselling services, (understanding the diagnosis, what to say when people ask questions, help when you're feeling frustrated or angry)
  • Sibling Day workshops as available

Eligibility

Social work services are available to children, youth and young adults receiving outpatient services and their families.

Referral process

Clients and their family members can refer themselves for social work services by contacting the Family Services Department. Outside agencies or JMCC staff may also make referrals with parental consent.

 
BEHAVIOURAL CONSULTATION
 
Behavioural consultation services provide a diverse range of supports to and intervention for children who are experiencing behavioural challenges within the Centre, in their homes, and/or the community.

Services include:
  • Determining developmentally appropriate expectations
  • Assistance in developing unified parenting styles
  • Defining goals and strategies
  • Providing educational materials
  • Parenting groups may be offered depending on interest and available resources

Eligibility

The child must be receiving outpatient services or be enrolled in the JMCC preschool or School Authority.  Behaviour consultation is available to:
  • Caregivers
  • JMCC therapists
  • JMCC preschool or school staff
  • *Staff at the child's community school during the child's transition year. A referral from the principal of the child's school is required.

Referral process

Caregivers can request behaviour consultation services by contacting the Family Services Department. Outside agencies or JMCC staff may also make referrals with caregiver consent.
