Jean and Dave Charley
Posted October 22, 2014
Jean and Dave Charley have a history with the John McGivney Children's Centre that goes back many years.  Jean has held many different roles; being involved with the Centre when it was known as the Red Cross School, then as The Children’s Rehabilitation Centre, and now as the John McGivney Children’s Centre.  Jean has been a preschool teacher, preschool director, a member of the board of directors, a grandparent to children attending the preschool program, and most currently a program volunteer.
One of Jean’s passions throughout her career is a love of music and the joy of sharing this love with children. Over the past 11 years, since her retirement, she has been a dedicated volunteer providing a "Music and Movement" program in which children learn about tempo, pitch & rhythm, as well as listening skills, turn taking and cooperation.

Jean and Dave have always been a package deal.  Dave has supported Jean in her passion, dedication and love for JMCC children.  Dave's love for JMCC children shines the brightest at Christmas when he sports his Santa suit for our Christmas parties for both Centre and staff children. He has been our forever Santa, gently giving of himself as he extends a hand to those children who are a little hesitant initially, and then finally winning them over as he softly coaxes them to come closer for a little chat with Santa.

When Jean is in the spotlight with her music and movement, Dave is quietly at her side. When Dave is in the spotlight as Santa, Jean is quietly at his side; each helping the other to do the work they love to do. They are a pair that cannot be outdone when it comes to commitment, pride, devotion and true love for JMCC; all JMCC stands for and the children it touches.

We are honored to present Jean and Dave with The Friend of the Centre Award and thank you for all you have given to our children and our families, enhancing and supporting the programs and services we offer over so many years.
Windsor Sertoma Club and Motor City Sertoma Club
Posted October 22, 2014
The Sertoma Club mandate is to assist individuals with communication difficulties and also to assist students pursuing a post bachelor degree in the field of communication disorders.   The Sertoma Club was introduced to our Centre by Kristy Davis, JMCC Speech Language Pathologist – who received a scholarship from the Sertoma Club when she attended Wayne State University.  They were contacted by Centre staff regarding the possibility of their Club being a funding source for our families with costly communication equipment.  They generously chose the John McGivney Children’s Centre, in particular our Augmentative Communication Clinic, to be recipients of an annual donation.  To date, the Windsor Sertoma Club and the Motor City Sertoma Club, in addition to their ongoing support of our clients, have donated over $34,000 to the Centre. The funds were utilized to purchase:
  • Speech Generating Devices for assessments of clients such as Accent, Echo, and Spring Board
  • iDevices for short term loans of equipment to clients and for use in treatment sessions for the speech and language pathologists servicing children in community schools.
  • Funds for staff members to participate in continuing education opportunities
  • To provide in-services for community partners and purchase of assessment screening kits
In 2014 the John McGivney Children's Centre will be providing service to approximately 2,400 children and youth who rely on the John McGivney Children’s Centre to help them be all they can be by enriching their lives and helping them reach their full potential. This would not be possible without the kindness and generosity of organizations such as the Sertoma Club. The John McGivney Children's Centre expresses their heartfelt appreciation for their ongoing support!
